Cemetery Saturday

Welcome to Pere Lachaise, the largest cemetery in Paris. Over 300,000 souls are buried here plus thousands of cremains.

The cemetery, located in the 20th arrondissement,
is visited by hundreds of thousands each year.

Named after the confessor of Louis XIV, Pere Francois de la Chaise who, in the late 1600's. lived in a Jesuit house on the grounds, now the site of the chapel.


The cemetery was founded in 1804 by Napoleon, and though far from the, then, center of town, became "the" place to spend eternity after the remains of several notables, including Moliere and Abelard and Heloise were relocated here.
