Studio Table

When Seth asked us to post a shot of our studio tables, I thought "uh-oh it won't look messy enough!" I'm one of those odd creatures - a left brained artist.  I adore organization ( have my entire stash detailed on a computer "Master List" telling what cigar box, library cabinet drawer, locker basket, etc each type resides in).  Mixed media requires so many supplies and bits of ephemera that I'm really happy I have the ability to do this.  Anyway, I do tend to clean up my studio table after each project and sometimes, gasp!, even in the midst of a project.  So this maybe as messy as it ever gets - a piece I'm putting the finishing touches on and the supplies I used to get to that point.  Off to the right a small stack I'm amassing to take on my trip to Venice next month.

  1. that's great that you can organize yourself to that extent. I'm left brained in some ways - I can organize my online life and I'm really logical - but when it comes to creativity - not so much.

    1. Lin - I love to create, but I have to admit I love organizing almost as much.

  2. I'm an odd creature, too... I can't concentrate if things are too messy!

Are you sure we're not related??? ;)

  3. I take it that the generous space you began in doesn't rapidly dwindle down to about 3 inches by 3 inches with piles around it like the Great Wall? Before I'm done, I'm usually working on my lap, the only spot left. It may be one of the reasons you accomplish so much. xo

    1. Marylinn - Actually the table space doesn't dwindle, but all the flat, and semi-flat, space near the table does. But I clean it up at the end of each session.

  5. Tracey - Those were a wonderful find at Cost Plus World Market a few years ago - I have 3 sets of them, the other two in a smaller size - all of them are perfect for bits and bobs of ephemera!

  6. Nice and neat and that's a great way to be. I am usually not so neat, but it does make finding things ever so much easier. Lovely spot. xox

  7. Corrine - There are times when I think maybe I'm "too" tidy, but as you say it does make it easier to find things!

  8. I admire that organizing/charting mindset. Years ago I had it in me but now I just like bins and drawers labeled with (hopefully) something that jogs my memory. Nice finding you via Seth!

  9. Marjie - Thanks, I have a few bins like that, labled
    misc. stuff" and "found objects"!

  12. Evidently I don't have any brain. My art space is too messy to work in. Yours is wonderful!

    1. Bill - You have a brain - it's right brained, which means you're so creative you can't be bothered with organizing! Either way is fine!

  13. You and I think exactly alike. As soon as I finish using a product, I put it back. I've had people join me for art days, and I've put something away, only to have to take it out again. I don't mind, because that's how MY brain thinks. Love your space and those drawers. Were I so lucky to have a desk that sits against a wall.

    Have a great trip, too.

    1. B&E - Actually my desk backs up on a bookcase and the whole studio area is in part of our huge great room. You are so right - I'd rather get something out several times than take a chance on not knowing where I left it!

  15. I love this look of creative activity! I'm with you... too much mess can really stifle my creativity so I like to order things on a regular basis.
