Solitude in B flat

Solitude in B flat

This is a piece that I did for a Black & White Challenge.

I spent many, many years of my life as a musician, and black & white suggested notes on staff paper, the solitude of the composer and the soloist. After this came to my mind, the piece almost magically came together.

Prep an 11x14 inch Masonite board with white gesso. While still damp cover with 7 Gypsies Musique” tissue paper. The dampness of the gesso will cause small wrinkles(which you want) and adhere the tissue to the board. Select collage image of female musician (mine is from Harter’s Picture Archive for Collage and Illustration- Dover Publications 1978). Photo copy using ivory parchment paper. Cut out the image, center on the board and affix to the tissue using matte medium. Cut “Solitude” tape (I found this at Art From Scrap in Santa Barbara) in 2 pieces of each style to fit the board’s dimensions. Using E-6000, attach to outside edges of the board. Coat entire piece in clear encaustic wax, building up uneven layers to create visual interest.

I love colour themes - they leave your possibilities wide open and yet everything always meshes, held together by colour.
